One morning in November of 2022, Chase and Elizabeth Ellinburg noticed a small bump above their 5-year-old daughter’s right eyelid. They consulted with Amelia’s pediatrician and two eye doctors before being sent to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Not even a week after first noticing the bump, Amelia was diagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft-tissue cancer. By early December, Amelia began 22 weeks of chemotherapy and 28 treatments of targeted proton therapy. After these treatments, Amelia was declared cancer-free and enjoyed watching her hair grow back and her full strength return over the next several months.
In early November 2023, right around the same time as the year before, new imaging showed a subcentimeter mass at Amelia’s original tumor site. Over the next few weeks, Amelia’s parents noticed an all-too-familiar bump growing on her eyelid in the same location as before. A surgical biopsy and MRI soon confirmed that Amelia’s cancer had relapsed, and, just as the year prior, Amelia began chemotherapy treatments the weeks before Christmas.
Despite this, Amelia remains strong and healthy in all regards, especially in her faith in God. In fact, on December 10, 2023, when faced with the possibility of her cancer returning, Amelia wrote out her own personal confession, which she declares daily: If rhabdomyosarcoma has returned, I command it to leave in Jesus’ name. Whatever the devil is planning cannot work!” This family stands on the promise of I Peter 2:24, which says, “By His stripes, you have been healed.”
