I chose Children’s Hospital New Orleans because they saved Rex’s life. I would like to share his story with you. Almost 3.5 years ago, Rex was admitted to the Children’s Hospital New Orleans because he was failing to thrive. He was 1.5 months old and still hadn’t reached his birth weight. He was so thin and frail despite eating every 30 minutes. His doctor kept telling me it takes time for babies to gain weight back but I kept yelling that my child wasn’t well! We were referred to the speech therapy department at Children’s Hospital. After a few sessions and studies of watching him breastfeed, they admitted him. He was in the hospital for three weeks. He saw every department. He had countless scans, blood draws and ultrasounds. He had an ng tube placed for a few months. The team of doctors was able to diagnose him with a super rare genetic disorder called Pseudohypoaldosteronism Type 1. His body wasn’t able to reprocess salt. He was on medication and salt supplements for 14 months and saw a team of doctors. Without the doctors at Children's Hospital New Orleans, he would not be here with us. It was some of the toughest months of our lives but I’m glad he was able to overcome his illness. It is now a controllable disorder. Last year he was also diagnosed with Eosinophilic esophagitis after a yearlong cough with vomiting. He went under a scope with the aerodigestive clinic to discover his diagnosis. He is working though severe allergies. He is a strong little boy and we love him so much. Thank you for reading Rex’s story and for your donation.
